Islamabad, Pakistan – The Pakistan Supreme Court has ruled that the decision of the country's poll commission to postpone assembly elections in two provinces was "unconstitutional."

The Supreme Court ordered the government on Tuesday to hold snap elections in Punjab, the country's most populous province, on May 14.

Following a hearing, the court issued its decision.

The highest court "did its duty."Asad Rahim Khan, a legal expert based in Lahore, applauded the Supreme Court's judgement and said that under "extreme pressure," it "did its duty" to uphold the law and the constitution and "kept democracy on the rails."

Khan claimed that the government's objections lacked any legitimate basis and were only intended to postpone the election.
He said that it was a "absurd reading of the constitution" to assert that the national and provincial elections must be held simultaneously.
According to attorney Abdul Moiz Jaferii, the Supreme Court has merely resolved the "lesser of the problems it was involved in" with Tuesday's decision.
