Pakistan deadliest for journalists for 2nd year

Pakistan is the world's deadliest country to work in for journalists, a dismal distinction it has acquired for the second year in a row, the Committee to Protect Journalists stated in its annual report. Of the 43 journalists killed worldwide in direct relation to their work in 2011, seven died in Pakistan, the non-profit organisztion said on its website Tuesday. According to officials, an explosion that occurred outside a political rally in northwest Pakistan on Monday left 10 people injured and five dead. The Tehriky-e-Taliban, or Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack. Asim Mehsud, a Taliban spokesman for Pakistan's South Waziristan region, claimed, "We carried out the attack." "We'll also target upcoming Awami National Party rallies because it's a secular party. We will also target any more rallies staged by secular political parties in the future." The chief minister and provincial leaders from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where the rally was held, attended the event, which was hosted by the Awami National Party. They left the vicinity shortly before the explosion, provincial spokesman Mian Iftikhar Hussain toldy.
